Shanghai International Circuit debuted with a Formula One race on September 26, 2004 with a total distance of 5.45 km (3.39 miles) consists of 9 straights and 14 curves with different radii. The biggest fall amounts to 12m with the the maximum downhill slope in some continual curves reaching 8%. The track has two massive straights, and this, coupled with its impressive width, means there is no excuse for a lack of wheel-to-wheel action from the Grand Prix cars. There are also two "snail-shaped" corners, which turn through more degrees (around 270) than anything seen before at this level of the sport. The field of Shanghai International Circuit covers the total area of 5.3 square kilometers approximately, among which the racing area amounts to about 2.5 square kilometers while areas for commerce, trading traveling and entertainment 2.8 square kilometers. The track, designed by Hermann Tilke - German architect of Malaysia's acclaimed Sepang track among others is about 5.4 kilometers in length totally, and the main and sub-grandstands and temporary grandstands can hold apx. 200,000 spectators and includes a theme park. (cost US$240 million) |
