The Losail International Circuit welcomed the MotoGP World Championship to Qatar for the first time ever in 2004. An agreement to stage a Grand Prix at the Middle-Eastern venue was reached in June 2003, with work beginning at the site that same October. The first stone was laid under the watchful eye of World Champions past and present, Mick Doohan and Valentino Rossi, in December ’03 and the track itself was laid in January ’04. The 5.4 kilometre circuit features a 1,068 metre straight and 16 corners and had been approved by the MotoGP Safety Commission made up of Valentino Rossi, Sete Gibernau, Kenny Roberts Jr. and Nobuatsu Aoki.

In 2008 the Losail Circuit held the opening MotoGP round at night under the lights.
